Timeline of events
1954: Montgomery Bus Boycotts; after African American woman Rosa Parks is arrested for refusing to move to the back of the bus, a citywide boycott of the bus system begins.
1960: Sit-Ins; African Americans began sitting at lunch counters at places that refused to serve African Americans as a form of protest.
1962: Martin Luther King "I Have A Dream" Speech; in front of hundreds of people MLK gave his opinion on segregation and changed thoughts of many.
1963: Equal Pay Act; Required all employees to be paid equal.
1964: Civil Rights Act of 1964; prohibited discrimination in several different cases such as prohibiting discrimination in voting, public accommodations, public facilities, public education, federally-assisted programs, and employment. The Act also establishes the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
1965: Voting Rights of 1965; prohibits denial or restriction of the right to vote.
1968: Assassination; Martin Luther King is assassinated.
