Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is seen as a civil rights leader because he peacefully fought for equality. Martin Luther King came up with many ideas to get people to realize the way African Americans were being treated was unconstitutional. Sit-ins were one of his ways of peaceful protests. A sit-in was when a group of African American went into a restaurant that refused to serve African Americans and sat down and ignored all outside behavior. Martin Luther King was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). This was an organization that worked to ensure equality amongst all different races. King later became part of the Student Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to find leadership for the civil rights movement. King was elected president for this organization. King traveled over 6 million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times. King appeared wherever there was injustice and through his peaceful ways of protest became the most well known figure in the world ("MLK" 1).
